Colorado Municipal Clerks Association
Hello Colorado Clerks!
Spring is in the air which means that Mother Nature is up to her usual tricks – hot, cold, rain, sleet, snow, windy, cloudy, the list goes on. It reminds me a bit of our customer base, both internal and external! As Clerks, we tend to be that first point of contact in our municipality. Some customers are that happy, sunny day and others are the cloudy, sleet bringing types – and we are expected to treat them all the same. Wow. When I was a teenager I worked at Coco’s in Arvada, CO – for those who were around in the 1980’s you may remember the chain. I learned quickly that if I smiled a lot, my tips increased. For some reason I felt I needed lots of cash when I was 16 years old – you know, to pay for the car that I needed to get to my job (you know the drill). My mom jokingly told me to put Vaseline on my teeth to help me smile more. As crazy as it sounds and as bad as it tasted, I put it on and it worked! I called it my “perma-grin”. There are days that I think I can’t smile at one more cranky customer or disgruntled employee and I wish for the days of “perma-grin” – and then I remember why I got into municipal government. I wanted to make a difference. When you want to make a difference, you will work in an industry where you will be in contact with those individuals that test your boundaries and push every button that you have. We all know that we can’t control them, just as we can’t control Mother Nature. What we can control is us – our thoughts, our actions and our intentions. Stay true to who you are – and the work you are called to do as a municipal clerk. When things get a bit rocky, put on your “perma-grin” and know that you ARE making a difference!
